Our client, a global academic publisher, is looking to recruit a Senior Journal Publishing Manager to manage the ongoing development of a list of society owned journals in the subject areas of Social Science and Humanities.

Reporting to the Publisher, the Senior Journal Publishing Manager will be responsible for the financial and editorial management of approximately 20 titles in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The main responsibilities of the role include:

  • Supporting academic editors to ensure high quality content is maintained
  • Ensuring that the company meets all contractual commitments for clients
  • Responsibility for the financial performance of titles
  • Researching and implementing ideas for developing content, revenue and profitability
  • Developing new revenue streams outside of traditional commissioning
  • Contributing towards team and company targets for growing revenue and profit
  • Enhancing the company’s reputation within the relevant subject communities
  • Travelling within the UK and overseas in the fulfilment of your duties.

The successful candidate will have experience managing academic journals and of fronting editor and editorial board meetings. Experience of managing society relationships would be beneficial. They will have knowledge of journal publishing processes and issues, along with strong negotiation, written and oral communication skills. Knowledge or interest in the disciplines of Social Sciences and Humanities is desirable.

The Bookseller runs a busy news desk covering all aspects of the publishing business, and requires a news hound to help break fresh news each morning via the website theBookseller.com, and research longer news stories for the weekly magazine.

 

The role is for a fixed-term six month period indirectly as maternity cover, though it may be extended.

The role will form a key part of our growing and innovative Digital Marketing team and will involve planning and executing digital marketing campaigns.  The role will be focused particularly on improving the customer journey for evaluation and retention around digital products.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the briefing, scheduling and monitoring of digital marketing campaigns, web and social activity, to achieve sales revenues, increased customer awareness and market share.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Planning, implementing and monitoring digital marketing, in accordance with the Campaign manager’s direction.
  • Planning campaigns to update, promote and drive traffic to online platforms in order to maintain our leading position in the education market.
  • Planning and delivering the messaging/content on key marketing websites, including the maximisation of SEO, the improvements to the evaluation journey, and run activity around the retention of digital customers.
  • Uploading new content on to the relevant areas of the websites.
  • Briefing, scheduling and monitoring the production of marketing materials where appropriate e.g. for online events, e-marketing and advertising campaigns.
  • Working collaboratively with other members of the marketing team, the publishers, sales managers and other functions from initial product to publication, to ensure smooth implementation of marketing strategies within and across the teams.
  • Tracking results and expenditure across all campaigns and report regularly to key stakeholders.
  • Supporting the efficient day-to-day running of the marketing operation and to take on as and when appropriate, ownership of key processes and system knowledge for the team e.g. SAP, web content management etc.

 

About you

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate Digital Marketing experience, along with a passion for education. Previous demonstrable experience of deploying and measuring successful marketing campaigns is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Selection of research studies for publication.
  • Managing peer review to ensure the highest quality of published research.
  • Commissioning and editing Reviews, Perspectives, News and Views and Comment articles.
  • Outreach and engagement with diverse academic communities, including attending conferences and visiting labs and institutions.
  • Identification of topics and areas for special focus.

Skills & Experience:

  • A PhD or equivalent qualification in a relevant social science discipline and a broad interest in human society’s interaction with plants. Specialisms of particular interest are

  • Postdoctoral or equivalent experience is preferred but not required.
  • Good interpersonal and influential communication skills.
