Assistant Managing Editor

We are looking for an experienced Managing Editor to join a growing editorial team at a leading publisher of tax and legal information based in Central London. This is an excellent chance for an Editor or Project Manager with substantial experience in legal or tax publishing to manage a team, and to be involved in the strategic expansion of the company’s content output.

Key duties:

  • As a product owner, lead a small team to achieve editorial targets according to schedules and quality standards
  • Commission authors and network with tax practitioners to build up the external writers pool
  • Work closely with Senior Management to commission market research, refine workflows and concepts, and to prepare business cases and development    proposals
  • Track emerging and key trends to ensure that products are relevant and meet subscriber needs
  • Project manage workflows to increase efficiency and accuracy

Experience / skills required:

  • Strong editorial and project management experience with a proven track record of working on major tax/legal publications
  • Excellent project management skills with experience in handling high volume workloads, managing multiple projects and delivering under pressure.
  • Very good interpersonal skills, including demonstrable ability to communicate, negotiate and advise diplomatically and effectively across all levels
  • Able to work independently and as part of a close-knit team
  • Law degree/tax qualification or equivalent

Editorial Coordinator

We have a super London-based role for a motivated Graduate looking to kick-start their career in publishing. Working for this highly successful, global publisher of Healthcare and Medical books and journals, the Editorial Coordinator will provide administrative support for the commissioning, submission and review of manuscripts for publication, across a range of research and review journals.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Acting as the go-between for the Editors, reviewers and authors - following up with their requests and queries
  • Commissioning content for journals and ensuring the efficient and timely publication of issues
  • Processing new and revised manuscript submissions - checking content is correctly formatted in their house style.
  • Maintaining accurate records for each journal, keeping the Publisher and Managing Editor informed of any problems or potential delays to publication
  • Maintaining and expanding reviewer databases
  • Maintaining journal websites, ensuring content is up-to-date and journal information kept current
  • Managing the coordination and processing of supplements
  • Ensuring copyright rules and procedures are adhered to
  • Processing payments for permission requests, section editors and reviewers
  • Compiling citation reports and other data as and when required

Experience:

This is an entry level position. Experience of working in publishing or a similar environment would be an advantage, but is not essential.         

  • Computer literacy is essential – you must have excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office products – Word, Excel and PPT
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent - essential
  • The ability to communicate effectively, and appropriately, with colleagues and customers at all levels in the organisation
  • Strong organisational skills – able to work under pressure and work to tight deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail is a must, as is the desire to learn

This is a full time role which can be based in their London or Oxford office.

 

Key duties:

•           Develop innovative and market-appropriate resources for UK schools market, with a focus on vocational and practical/technical courses

•           Take responsibility for delivering on time and to budget their ambitious publishing plan

•           Research, commission and oversee an extensive range of publishing projects

•           Manage the financial performance of the list and contribute to ongoing team publishing strategy

•           Work on wide range of subjects but you will have the opportunity to take on an area of commissioning responsibility where you will you lead strategy.

 

Experience / skills required:

•           Significant book commissioning experience is essential for this role

•           You must have demonstrable experience of digital and print publishing business

•           You will have proven experience of commissioning materials in print and digital format

•           A background in educational publishing is highly desired

•           You must have experience of strategic planning, project management and market research

•           A proven commercial understanding of product development is essential

•           You must have excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills

We are currently seeking a highly experienced Editor to contribute to a small and busy team. Reporting to the publisher, the successful candidate will manage titles from commissioning to publication and beyond. You will have extensive experience of publishing art books, ideally in a museum or gallery context, strongeditorial and project management skills, confidence with figures and a keen eye for design.

 

Educated to degree level or equivalent in art history, you will also have excellent communication and IT skills including proficiency with InDesign and Excel. European language skills such as French, Spanish, Italian or German will be an advantage.

 

The role holder may be required to deputise for the Publisher on occasion.
