Review Editor (Journal of Experimental Biology)

A scientific charity based in Cambridge is looking for a part-time Review Editor to on work the Journal of Experimental Biology.  This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to the leading journal in comparative animal physiology. This role will ideally work for 15 hours per week.

Key duties:

  • Commission and handle peer review and developmental editing of review materials
  • Creative involvement in the journal’s development
  • Closely work with in-house team, including another part-time Reviews Editor and international team of academic editors
  • Represent the journal at international conferences and in the wider scientific community

Experience / skills required:

  • Educated to degree level, ideally PhD, or equivalent in scientific field
  • Previous editorial experience will be advantageous
  • Excellent interpersonal, enthusiasm and literary skills
  • A broad interest in science and the scientific community
  • Creative and passionate scientific publishing

One of the main responsibilities of the Copyright and Contracts Executive is to advise the business on contractual and licensing matters, in order to minimise risks and to protect the companies products and services. The Copyright and Contracts Executive will deal with complex contractual and licensing matters and infringements arising within the company and, when required, liaise with solicitors. There will also be the requirement to work as a flexible member of the team, carrying out all core Copyright work as required.

We are looking for someone who ideally has solid experience of working in music or educational publishing, in copyright and licensing role(s), with particular emphasis on drafting contracts and licences. You will also ideally have a relevant legal qualification e.g. a law degree and legal practice course or paralegal experience.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Editorial Director to join our Picture Books, Partnerships and Illustrated Non-fiction team. We make it our mission to publish the books that will inspire young children to believe they can be or do anything, whether that’s feeling empowered by a brilliant picture book, horizon-broadening non-fiction or going on adventures with our family of much-loved characters like Peter Rabbit and Spot. 

We are now looking for someone with a wealth of ideas to join our team and help us develop this amazing list for our ever-growing range of non-traditional customers in the UK and throughout the world. This is a newly created role that will involve working closely with our dynamic creative and sales teams, and is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a diverse mix of skills to build a new, bespoke stream of publishing. 

You might have a strong background in publishing, or you may have made your career to date in the retail sector, or another area –  what you will definitely have is boundless creativity combined with sound commercial judgement and a proven ability to see projects through from conception to completion. You will be inspired by trends in popular culture to identify areas for growth and development, and will be endlessly inventive in finding ways to take our publishing – both contemporary and heritage – to new audiences.

Content Development Editor (Science Publishing)

A scientific journals publisher is looking to appoint a Content Development Editor for their journals and ePublishing. This is a temp role to start ASAP and will be on a rolling month by month basis. You will be responsible for developing and delivering the digital content strategy and supporting strategic developments for the journal.

Key duties:

  • Monitor the performance of scientific editors and ensure policies and ethical practices are being adhered to
  • Project manage special issues and lead on the introduction of new digital features
  • Developing digital content, including editing audio and video content
  • Develop and deliver the social media strategy
  • Maintain good communication between the Editorial Board
  • Support  marketing strategy by writing copy for e-newsletters and overseeing activity delivered by our publishing partner, taking ownership of specific campaigns
  • Copy-edit and proofread manuscripts and check full issue proofs for layout and consistency
  • Write copy for marketing materials such as a quarterly e-newsletter and communication channels,
  • Supervise the Editorial Assistant and contribute to their ongoing development

Experience / skills required:

  • Experience of STM (scientific, technical and medical) journal publishing
  • Experience of online peer review systems
  • Experience of working with scientific journal editors
  • Excellent editing, copywriting and proof-reading skills
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage time effectively

European Account Manager

Our client, a leading STM Publisher, requires a new European Account Manager. You will be responsible for generating Display Advertising sales revenue for print and online projects across the range of journals. Fundamental to this role are the development of productive and long-term external client relationships and a constant emphasis upon new business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sales of Display advertising and related products within the designated territory across all life science journal products in print and online.
  • Achieve sales targets by building productive long-term business relationships and generating new business potential within the designated geographic territory.
  • Develop and maintain a high standard of visibility within the designated sales territory.
  • Manage a defined group of Key Accounts to establish close interaction between businesses and to understand their structures and strategies in order to strengthen relationships and increase spend.
  • Achieve and maintain a high level of sales calls and external sales activity.
  • Work collaboratively with Display Advertising colleagues to create a culture of success, excellence and continuous development.
  • Develop and maintain close relationships with other commercial departments
  • Develop a strong understanding of our business segments, the competitive environment and stay informed of the latest trends and developments. Take advantage of this knowledge to propose business opportunities for the team.
  • Attend industry events and make frequent on-site visits to clients as required by the business.
  • Maintain accurate sales records and effective administration using AdDepot and other specified tools as required.

Skills & Experience: 

  • Must have extensive sales experience (advertising/sponsorship) within a similar publishing environment and experience of the STM publishing sector is desirable.
  • Must have extensive experience selling digital advertising solutions including branded content marketing.
  • The ideal candidate will be a pro-active, dynamic and constructive team player who has demonstrated the ability to work successfully within a complex organization.
  • Language skills would be desirable however not essential
