Commissioning Editor - an international publishing company with a portfolio, encompassing the agriculture and animal husbandry sector is looking to appoint an experienced and ambitious commissioning editor to help build their farming and related publishing across print, digital and distance learning products.

You will manage a range of commissioning activity with a view to developing a profitable, fast growing back and front list range of titles. This position could be based at the company’s offices in Oxford, the North or possibly even be home-based for the right candidate.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience of publishing in a similar role in the agriculture and animal husbandry markets and will have strategies for publishing opportunities in this sector.

You must be able to organize, plan and prioritise your work, and have excellent communication and negotiation skills.

An excellent opportunity is available for a dynamic and driven individual to fill the vacancy of Acquisitions Editor within a global STM publisher. This role will be responsible for the editorial strategy, acquisition, and management of a portfolio of traditional Major Reference Works.

Reporting to the Publisher, the key responsibilities of the Acquisitions Editor include:

  • Developing and acquiring commercially attractive, new e-leading reference content products, including creating proposals and financials for approval and then commissioning high-quality and committed editors-in-chief for each product.
  • Managing a portfolio of published Major Reference Works (print and online) to identify, develop and publish revision, adaptation and derivative products targeted to market needs.
  • Maintaining strong relationships with editors and authors, including calling meetings as needed and ensuring author queries and concerns are appropriately handled.
  • Developing and implementing an editorial strategic plan for the portfolio to meet market needs, including recommendations for product positioning and strategic partnerships.
  • Acquiring customer knowledge, subject knowledge and competitor knowledge, and building a network of appropriate and high-quality contacts, such as potential editors-in-chief, editorial board members, and other key influences and leaders, for subject areas within portfolio.

The suitable candidate to fill the role of Acquisitions Editor will be able to demonstrate:

  • Successful experience in scientific publishing with journals or books.
  • Strong project management skills and success in previous projects.
  • Commissioning experience and management of external editorial boards.
  • Keen business acumen alongside strategic planning and strong negotiating skills.
  • Education to degree level or equivalent, preferably with scientific background.

An excellent opportunity is currently available at a global STM publisher within their books department for an Associate Acquisitions Editor on a 6 month contract. This role will be expected to effectively manage acquisitions activity around an assigned portfolio of Major Reference Works.

The key responsibilities of the Associate Acquisitions Editor include:

  • Alongside the Acquisitions Editor and/or Publisher input, creating a signing hit list for that year and beyond, including revisions and new editions of Major Reference Works, and content for publication in new online reference modules as appropriate.
  • Meet annual signing goals, signing from target title list and pursuing other proposals as opportunity arises and as aligned with strategy and agreed with manager.
  • Ensuring all the appropriate proposal materials are available; finding reviewers and managing review process.
  • Researching proposal content, competing and/or related titles, sales history.
  • Monitoring progress of projects through to publication, maintaining close collaboration with Major Reference Works Project Manager, who has day-to-day responsibility for the project once the Editorial Board is commissioned.
  • Contingency planning and troubleshooting in order to deliver the right product at the right time.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience within publishing in a similar role.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to solve problems, multitask and be decisive when required.
  • Strong ability to work under initiative and have a keen eye for detail.
  • Education to degree level or equivalent; science background preferred but not essential.

The role also includes a sales component where you would be working with our sales representatives and key booksellers to develop and maintain good relationships with our key booksellers. 

 

The ideal candidate should have experience in publishing/marketing, be a good team player and enjoy working in a social office. Working for a mid-sized publisher, this is a great opportunity to learn all aspects of marketing and sales, and develop a good knowledge of the publishing business through working closely with colleagues in the other departments. A scientific background will be a bonus but not essential. As there is some design work with emails and flyers, knowledge or an enthusiasm to learn HTML or InDesign/Photoshop will also be helpful. Familiarity with online social media will also be helpful.

Editorial Production Assistant

A highly respected and successful medical society publisher based in London is looking to appoint an Editorial Production Assistant to join their editorial Production team.  This is a key role within the department and will require the successful person to have both a knowledge of design and editorial skills.

This role will be a great role to develop your publishing and design skills and key responsibilities of the position will include: providing design and creative support to the editorial Production Department, producing regular advertorial pages in their flagship journal as well as the marketing department, working with them to provide campaign content.  You will be involved in copyediting and production checking accepted papers during the editing process and check figures on accepted papers for quality and request new versions where necessary (editing figure sets to match up with artwork briefs for all accepted papers. You will provide administrative support, working with the Editor and production team to ensure the reviewing process is completed efficiently and administer the Book and App Review section of the website.  Working with the editor to commission external reviewers to ensure regular flow of copy for this section and edit accepted copy to reflect journal style. Other responsibilities will involve validating and setting all reference sets for style and formatting, raising queries with the authors and taking on further validations as necessary.

This is a great role for someone who has some experience of design and editorial and who is looking for the next step.  The successful person will be of graduate calibre and will have a working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign (Essential) and MS Word.  You will have some experience in a similar environment ideally from a publishing background (medical/STM publishing is desirable but not essential) and you should have some experience of managing a varied workload; previous editing/text experience would be an advantage as would a knowledge of the journal publishing process.  You will have excellent attention to detail and able to work to deadlines. Experience of using Indesign to lay out attractive print-ready pages would be desirable.

We will also consider a graduate from a relevant publishing course who has the necessary skills and some work experience to bring to the role.

This is a wonderful opportunity to work with a prestigious children`s brand and the successful candidate will be of graduate calibre with a strong interest in children`s publishing.  You will have at least 2-3 years experience in an editorial capacity within children`s publishing, ideally with a background in novelty and/or pre-school books. You will have excellent attention to detail with a strong creative ability; competent in project and time management; great communication and administration skills.  Experience of using InDesign would be useful but not essential but you should be motivated and keen to work as part of a successful team.

Our client requires an Online Products Assistant to join their busy and growing team based in central London. The main function of this role will be to support the Online Products team in research projects and general administrative tasks. Alongside this they shall be involved in market research, product testing, reporting and analysis, in a varied and exciting role.

 

The ideal candidate will be a graduate or equivalent with working knowledge of the publishing industry and experience with online products and services. They will be organised, efficient and a strong communicator. They will also have a keen eye for detail and an analytical way of thinking. Demonstrable experience with Google Analytics would also be advantageous for this role.

A leading International academic publisher in London is currently recruiting for a full time/permanent  Customer Services Group Manager. This senior position is responsible for managing a team of 15 staff who work on processing book orders and journals subscriptions and supporting customers. You will also be involved in managing a migration project. This will involve significant change management and training of staff in new processes. 

 

Key duties:

  • Play a key role in transitioning  books to new fulfilment system
  • Merge the books and journals teams into one department
  • Manage the changes necessary to work in the new environment
  • Define new job roles and review resourcing levels in light of the changes.
  • Where necessary make recommendations to create new roles or change existing roles and team structure.
  • Manage the workload off-shored to India.
  • Work with the team to identify further tasks which could be transferred from London to India and manage the steps required to transition the transfer.
  • Work closely with the sales team to ensure that the quality of service offered and SLAs are being met by the team.
  • Support customers in EMEA, APAC and INDIA.

 

Experience / skills required:

  • Previous people management experience, preferably in publishing
