Freelance Fiction Editor (x2) (Home-based)

Job Description:

We are looking for two fiction editors to join our busy freelance team.

The ideal candidates will have solid experience in editing or commissioning fiction in a professional capacity and, optionally, experience of writing reader's reports on manuscripts for an established literary consultancy. Any experience of assisting a literary agent will also be particularly desirable.

Alongside editing skills and up to date market knowledge, candidates must have a real passion for nurturing emerging writers and demonstrate skill for constructive criticism.

The role is home-based and involves assessing adult fiction manuscripts and preparing assessment reports which cover aspects relating to story, narrative, style, characterisation and marketability with the aim of helping the writer improve the quality and commercial appeal of their manuscript. Full briefing provided, as well as ongoing support.

You will need an exceptional eye for detail, plus the ability to manage a busy workload and to work well within a team.

Key duties:

  • Liaise with designers, editors, authors and external clients to develop re-use projects
  • Manage scheduling of re-use titles and reprints into production, including sales material
  • Write lively, engaging copy for book covers and content, website, social media and marketing material
  • Proofread material at all appropriate stages of production, ensuring total accuracy
  • Attend monthly editorial meetings to feed back on new submissions
  • Contribute to and minute scheduling, production and editorial meetings
  • Maintain filing of sales material, archive library and contracts
  • Maintain key departmental databases, plus miscellaneous administrative tasks to ensure the smooth running of the department

This is an exciting role as the Digital Marketer plays a key role in the marketing team, overseeing the company’s digital marketing strategy and online presence to ensure the key titles campaigns deliver online awareness and exposure to a growing range of readers and consumers.

You’ll be the voice of the digital marketing department and enjoying a broad remit in the role to help develop and implement a digital marketing strategy online for physical and eBooks for all imprints & titles.

As the Digital Marketer you’ll report to the Head of Marketing and manage all aspects of digital marketing, from promoting books via social media to planning and implementing digital marketing campaigns as well as overseeing the running of the Company website. 

Your role is also to be the key contact point for digital marketing across the business, as well as communicating with authors & illustrators and internal department including, sales, PR, publishing and of course your colleagues in marketing.

We’re looking for a creative and commercial digital marketeer, someone who will relish the chance to apply their skills to promoting books. Ideally, you’ll have relevant experience of marketing children’s brands, either in the publishing industry or perhaps wider entertainment industry, and a passion for promoting children’s books across all age ranges.

We have a lovely new role for a motivated Production Controller to work on a broad list of 4 colour books, with a highly popular and well-known company.  If you are looking to broaden your colour experience, this interesting production role could be for you!

Reporting to the Production Manager the Production Controller will work on a varied range of assigned titles from manuscript to finished books, ensuring they are produced to the highest standard, to schedule and within budget.

Some of the key responsibilities include:

  • Checking specification of required dummies and distribute to appropriate departments with dummy approval form for signature
  • Check schedule for assigned titles from manuscript to finished books
  • Attend start-up meetings for assigned titles and ensure books can be produced within budget and schedule and according to foreign language requirements
  • Advise design department on co-edition requirements
  • Arrange repro within budget, schedule and place work with repro house
  • Check repro files in InDesign on receipt from the design department
  • Check jacket files in InDesign
  • Maintain regular contact with printers to ensure schedule doesn’t slip

We have a fantastic new opportunity for a Journal Development Manager to join a leading open access publisher. This is an exciting time to join this innovative and technology driven scientific publisher in a period of huge growth. This role will oversee several journals and contribute to acquisition and development strategies.

Key duties:

  • Manage several journals and launch new titles, ensuring growth and success
  • Drive content acquisition strategies and innovate and implement editorial strategies
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with high-profile academics
  • Promote and represent journals in all communications
  • Forecast journal growth and deliver against targets
  • Lead internal projects on content management, ensuring quality standards are met
  • Liaise with colleagues to ensure smooth running of operations

Experience / skills required:

  • Experience in STM or academic journal publishing is essential
  • Strong project management and organisation skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • A proactive attitude and the ability to work independently on own initiative
  • Able to digest large amounts of information and react effectively under pressure
  • Excellent communication, with a decisive and tactful approach
  • An interest or background in ICT or Mathematics would be advantageous
  • Solid IT skills including Excel and a working knowledge of social media networks/platforms
